i own a repair shop,,and we do a lot of work on some of the old classics ,,a good place to start would be to start going to a lot of car shows,,you,ll get very familiar with a lot of the old ones,and it helps you learn about the ones that are worth restoring,,and the ones that are not,,it really will help though in getting used to being around them,,i started back in the real early 70,s and went from there,,there are a lot of books on the market,but experience is the best way to learn anything,,another thing that will help,,find an old car you can buy to fix,,learn all about it that you can ,,this will be a good teacher,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.
