- The brand. Matchbox cars came out first. They were considered collectors Items. Hotwheels was smart and contracted with McDonalds to be happy meal toys, a move that made them collectibles and got them a lot of publicity.
- Originally, Matchbox were just little toy cars, but Hot Wheels were designed to be fast, and they raced on a track. I don't know if Matchbox has changed any since the 1970s, though.
Edit: Though Matchbox did come out first, Hot Wheels came out in the late 1960s -- McDonalds happy meals don't really have anything to do with their success.
